You could be Danger Mouse

The other day I was reviewing a list of official remix contests. Displeased with the current contests, I started flipping back through some archives.

I came across an official Jay-Z remix contest that was offered last December. The materials included acapella versions of all songs of a CD of his titled American Gangster. The prizes for contest winner were: a digital release, artwork, 500 copies to be marketed in the streets in the USA.

Sound familiar? Check out the contest page, it’s still up. Fine, I’ll post it here anyways. I enjoy the wording of the proposal:

Most of you probably haven’t heard Danger Mouse & Jemini’s Ghetto Pop Life, that is because it came out before The Grey Album. Before he was climbing the charts producing for the Gorillaz, DangerDOOM and Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse was just another producer trying to get his name out. It was remixing Jay-Z’s The Black Album into the controversial Grey Album that put him on the map.

Now it’s your chance to make your mark remixing Jay.

How could someone pass up a ‘just add water’ to become Dangermouse proposition? We all know how great Jay-Z sounds remixed.

But what about the actual terms of Dangermouse’s release? His water wasn’t legal.
